Designing for your subconscious - Stefan's introductionSeptember 24, 2015

By Stefan Filff

I hardly find myself waking up with an eager, drowsy smile on my face and beam towards the day ahead. However, for the last few weeks working here has made me feel just like that. It does not take long for me – just a mere 5 minutes at most – to head over the office, sit down, pour in some coffee and go jumping at the problems crying to be solved. It’s statisfying to watch those gradual changes caused by your input. Some are more immediate, some surface as a result of a longer-lasting routine.

How I imagine myself to look like every morning if I were a model for stock photography. Thanks, dreamstime.com

Hey, I’m Stefan. I’m working here at SassyBot as a Generalist Designer. My task is to embed the Human Touch into our work and bring the crafted narrative of Fragments of Him straight into your heart. I love to work on the small things – those subtle elements your subconscious appreciates most. It’s about where you look during play, what you feel when interacting with something, and how your views shift as you unravel more of the story and the bond between our characters. It’s a diversified area of work that involves a colourful mix of tasks all ranging from the placement of objects, the volume and perception of sound, all the way over to carefully carving out the path you take as a player. With my work on Fragments of Him I aim to make these experiences accessible for both fast-paced and calm-minded players alike so that both can soak up the content without feeling any losses due to following their preferred playstyle.

Next to my contributions to SassyBot I stay in touch with VR-enthusiasts all over the world. I see great potential in the raised level of immersion that is coming closer to every single one of us, both on the developing and consuming side. VR devices and its development hardware are becoming more prevalent in the industry; I can hardly decide where to dive my head into first with this technology.

I hope this was enough about me and what I do to sate your curiosity for now. For me, it was the right decision to have stepped into this small, yet ambitious team that greeted me as one of their own to let me partake in this rare experience we wish to share with you. It’s still a fine way ahead, full of adjustments, headscratching, occasional laughs and those beautiful moments that lean right into your heart – despite having playtested that one scene for the 152th time during production. I believe there’s some ancient emotional game magic at work for us to feel that way.

Take care now!
